The Lourdes men's volleyball team continued its recent string of 3-0 victories, defeating Siena Heights 25-21, 25-18, 25-23 to stay perfect in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night at the SHU Fieldhouse.
"We had a battle tonight against a strong opponent," stated head coach
Greg Reitz following the victory. "I am happy that when we were challenged we stepped up our game and made some plays. Earning a three-set victory on the road in this conference is big and something that's important for us."
Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts) recorded a double-double for Lourdes, putting down a game-high 14 kills and adding 10 digs to his resume. Both
Ricardo Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco) and
Henrique Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco) also notched double-doubles in the victory.
The former provided 11 kills and 10 digs on the evening, while the latter handed out 39 assists and added 11 digs.
Evan Gebert (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) also proved to be a force offensively, collecting 13 kills for the Gray Wolves.
Defensively,
Matheus Andrade (Coronel Fabriciano, Brazil/Alberto Giovannini) registered a game-high 14 digs.
After falling behind 9-4 in the first set, Lourdes scored seven of the next eight points to take a 12-10 lead. The Saints (9-7, 2-3 WHAC) regained control at 20-18, but the Gray Wolves closed the set on a 7-1 run capped by a Lam kill to claim the first set.
Lourdes cruised in the second set, connecting at a .382 clip and registering 19 kills. Lourdes fell behind 7-1 and saw the lead move to 15-10 midway through the set. From there, Lourdes used a 9-0 run to gain the lead as it went on to claim set two 25-18.
The Gray Wolves once again fell behind early in set three but were able to respond and take an 8-7 lead following a Gebert service ace.
Lourdes stretched its third set lead to as many as 19-16, but SHU fought back to take a late 23-22 lead.
Ricardo Gehrke laid down a kill before Gebert sealed the victory with back-to-back kills.
Emmanuel Chaidez led the Saints with seven kills offensively, while Keegan Crawford handed out 22 assists.
Lourdes (10-2, 3-0 WHAC) will return to action on Friday evening in a showdown with unbeaten and No. 6-ranked Aquinas inside the Ebeid Recreation Center with first serve set for 7 p.m.
