Lourdes wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Monday afternoon, defeating Saint Mary (Kan.) in a neutral site contest played at Spartan Field in Saint Louis, Mo.
Â
"Today was a great team victory," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "In the second half the offense really started to come together and play unselfishly. The effort on defense was great and the leadership was solid."
Â
The first half was a defensive battle, with Lourdes taking a 2-1 lead into the break following a goal by
Blake Alexander (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) with just 33 seconds remaining.
Â
The Gray Wolves scored the first two goals of the second half to increase the advantage and pulled ahead 6-2 after three quarters. Alexander added two more goals in the fourth to finish with four goals while
Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse H.S.) added two more.
Â
Lourdes outshot Saint Mary 46-15 for the day and held a 33-19 ground ball advantage.Â
Nick Johnson (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.), Alexander, and Causley all had four ground balls each.
Â
Tyler Hart (Brighton, Mich./Brighton H.S.) made six saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Andy Meyers had two goals for Saint Mary (1-3) while Zander Smith made 14 stops in the cage.
Â
Lourdes will have nearly two weeks off before its home opener on March 23 against Taylor to begin Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play. The opening faceoff is set for noon at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
The Gray Wolves were slated to host Cleary on March 20, but Lourdes has already been awarded a forfeit victory.
