After dropping the opening game of the day to Indiana-South Bend 6-2, Lourdes rebounded for its first victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 11-3 at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla.
"It felt good to get our first win today," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "You can see we getting more comfortable playing together with each game. The offense finally came alive in game two and we were able to string some hits together. We have a much needed day off tomorrow and look to build on our success when we return to the diamond."
Having scored nine runs in its first five games, Lourdes erupted for 11 against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, tallying a season-high 11 hits while also drawing eight walks.
After the Pomeroys scored one in the top of the first, the Gray Wolves responded with three in the bottom of the frame.
Tiana Card (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea-Midpark H.S.) singled home a run and
Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.) delivered a two-run single.
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) added to the lead in the second with a two-run home run to straight away centerfield. In the fourth,
Megan Motte (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Gauthier followed with a RBI single, increasing the lead to 7-1.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (2-4) scored two in the fifth before the Gray Wolves answered in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.).
Lourdes closed the game out in the sixth as Gauthier finished a three-hit, five RBI game with a two-run home run and Kostick added a sacrifice fly to end the contest.
Kostick and
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) each had two hits in the contest.
Card earned her first collegiate victory in the circle (1-2), allowing just one earned run and scattering six hits in the complete game win. She struck out six while walking just two. Brooke Coffing took the loss (1-1), surrendering five runs and four hits while walking three in two innings of work.
In the opener, Indiana-South Bend took the lead in the third with four hits, plating three runs.
The Gray Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to close within one, courtesy of a Titans' throwing error.
Indiana-South Bend (5-0) took advantage of a walk and two hit batters in the fifth and three walks and a hit batter in the sixth to score the final three runs of the game.
Card, Ziegler, and
Allie Teeple (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) each had two hits for Lourdes as part of a seven-hit attack. The Titans finished with eight hits but took advantage of six walks and three hit batters.
Becca Stevens earned the win (3-0), giving up one earned run while fanning seven in a complete game effort.
Ashley Riley (Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), allowing four runs and seven hits in five innings of action.
Lourdes (1-5) will return to the diamonds on Thursday for a pair of games. The Gray Wolves face Southeastern at 9 a.m. and Missouri Baptist at 11:15 a.m. at Legends Way.
