Lourdes rallied with three runs in the seventh against Saint Ambrose to post a 3-1 victory on Friday before falling to Bemidji State 14-4 at Legends Way in Clermont, Fla.
Â
"I thought game one was our most complete game to date," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We did a much better job at the plate today overall."
Â
The Gray Wolves surrendered their only run in the opener in the bottom of the second as Lourdes'
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) and the Bees' Christian Pembrook matched zeros the rest of the way through six innings.
Â
Lourdes finally broke through in the seventh as
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) led off with a double. After an error and walk loaded the bases with one out, Pembrook was able to induce a fielder's choice for the second out.Â
Alexis Nowowiecki (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) came through with an infield single to tie the game and
Shylee Schmeltz (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) hit a grounder to third that was thrown away, allowing the two go ahead runs to score.
Â
Saint Ambrose (15-7) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Kostick induced a comebacker to the circle to end the game.
Â
Kostick needed just 85 pitches in the complete game win (1-1), walking two and scattering four hits while allowing just the one run. She struck out two. Pembrook yielded the three unearned runs and four hits while also walking two and fanning four in the loss (7-3).
Â
Bemidji State (13-7) scored first in the opening inning of game two, only to have Lourdes match it in the bottom of the frame.Â
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Kostick's sacrifice fly.
Â
The Beavers pulled in front for good in the second with a pair of runs, but Lourdes was able to cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Kostick doubled home
Allie Teeple (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.), who reached on a bunt single and stole second.
Â
A three-run fourth opened the game up for Bemidji State, and the Beavers sent 14 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring eight times on just three hits. They took advantage of five walks and two hit batters in the frame.
Â
Lourdes managed two runs in the bottom of the fifth, one on an error off the bat of Stanton and another on a groundout by
Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.), but was unable to extend the game past five innings.
Â
Kaidron McClafferty earned the win (2-0), allowing eight hits and four earned runs for the Beavers.Â
Tiana Card (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea-Midpark H.S.) took the loss (1-5), allowing 13 runs, nine of which were earned, and eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Â
"Tomorrow if we can put together all three phases of the game, we can end this trip on a positive note," Gordon added.
Â
Lourdes (2-8) will close out its Florida swing on Saturday at Hancock Park. The Gray Wolves face Missouri Baptist at 9:15 a.m. and Saint Mary (Neb.) at 11:30 a.m.
