Lourdes dropped both ends of a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader against Lawrence Tech on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field, falling by scores of 4-1 and 7-4.
Â
"I thought we competed and played two very clean games today," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "It was disappointing to lose two close games."
Â
Lawrence Tech jumped in front in the opening inning of game one with a RBI double and added a pair of runs, both on groundouts, in the third.
Â
The Gray Wolves scored their lone run in the fifth as
Cameron Gallo's (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) sacrifice fly plated
Austin Oulds (Chatham, Ont./Kent H.S.). The Lourdes offense would come up empty the rest of the way though, as the Gray Wolves managed just five hits, all singles, in the opener.
Â
The Blue Devils added an insurance run in the eight on a two-out single to secure the win.
Â
Oulds and Gallo each had two hits for Lourdes, accounting for all but one of the hits against Matt Blunk, who earned the win (3-1) for Lawrence Tech. Blunk worked eight innings, striking out seven and walking five while allowing just an unearned run.
Â
Liam Bloom (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2) for the Gray Wolves, yielding three runs and six hits in seven innings of work.
Â
The Blue Devils took an early lead in the nightcap as well. The first five batters of the game reached with singles, with four crossing the plate.
Â
A two-out run in the third and an earned run in the fourth inning increased the Lawrence Tech lead to 6-0 before the visitors tacked on a seventh run in the top of the sixth inning.
Â
After being shutout for six innings, Lourdes finally broke through with two outs in the seventh. A bases loaded walk to
Braden Halford (Port Hope, Ont./Saint Mary's H.S.) scored
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) and Gallo followed with a two-run single that plated
Brandon Horman (Oregon, Ohio/Saint John's Jesuit H.S.) and
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.).
Â
Lourdes (7-10, 1-3 WHAC) continued its rally in the eighth as Horman singled with two outs to plate
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.), pulling the Gray Wolves within three, 7-4, but that would be as close as the hosts would get.
Â
Ammons had three hits and Denman added two more as part of the Gray Wolves' eight-hit effort in game two. Â
Â
Alek Wietrzykowski went the distance for the win (2-1) for Lawrence Tech (18-9, 2-2), striking out nine.Â
Kolby Rogge (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) suffered the loss (0-3), allowing six runs, five of which were earned, and 10 hits in five innings. He struck out five.
