Lourdes Closes WHAC Play with Sweep of Siena Heights

Second-ranked Lourdes wrapped up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening with a convincing 25-17, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Siena Heights inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"We served and passed well tonight which allowed us to be in system," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "We did a great job of extending some rallies with our hustle plays."

Ricardo Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco H.S.) put down a match-high 17 kills while hitting .516 and Evan Gebert (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider H.S.) added 1221 kills on the evening.  Henrique Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco H.S.) handed out 35 assists while leading an offense that hit .350 on the night.

"It was great to see Ricardo back healthy," Reitz added.  "He had an outstanding performance while Henrique set a good match."

Defensively, Matheus Andrade (Coronel Fabriciano, Brazil/Alberto Giovanni H.S.) set a school record for a three-set match with 20 digs while Brendan Brown (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny H.S.) was involved in six blocks.

Lourdes hit a blistering .400 in the opening set, and used a 9-2 run midway through the stanza to open up a 19-10 advantage on the way to taking the early lead in the match.  A 7-1 run in the second lifted Lourdes to a 12-5 edge and the Gray Wolves limited the Saints to just .059 hitting in the set.

The Gray Wolves raced out to a 7-1 lead in the third, and after the Saints pulled within two, 18-16, Lourdes finished the match on a 7-2 spurt to complete the sweep.

Evan Cashen led Siena Heights (17-9, 4-4 WHAC) with seven kills while Emilier De Jesus tallied 11 digs.

Lourdes (18-3, 8-0) will close out the regular season hosting the Lourdes Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The Gray Wolves face Charleston (W. Va.) on Friday evening in their first match of the weekend with the first serve set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
