Lourdes dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Racer Field in Lima, Ohio, falling to the University of Northwestern Ohio 6-1 and 3-1.
Â
Lourdes fell behind in the second of game one, as the Racers batted around, scoring four times, two of which were unearned. Northwestern Ohio plated two more runs in the third, increasing the lead to 6-0.
Â
The Gray Wolves had chances in each of the first three innings, stranding two runners on the bases in both the second and third frames.
Â
In the fourth Lourdes finally broke through on the scoreboard.Â
Alexis Nowowiecki (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) led off with a single and
Ashley Riley (Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor H.S.). With two outs,
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) singled through the left side, driving home Nowowiecki for the Gray Wolves' lone run of the game.
Â
Riley, who came on in relief in the second inning, allowed just one hit over the final three frames, but the Lourdes offense was unable to score as well.
Â
Genzman, Nowowiecki, and
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) each had two hits for the Gray Wolves in the opener.
Â
Aubrey Brunst earned the win (9-6) for Northwestern Ohio, allowing the one run and eight hits in a complete game effort. She struck out one and did not walk anyone. Kostick took the loss (4-8), allowing four runs, two of which were earned, and five hits in 1.2 innings in the circle.
Â
In game two, it was Lourdes which struck first in the opening inning.Â
Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) doubled as the second batter of the game and moved to third on a single by
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) with two outs.Â
Erin Manley (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) followed with a hit of her own through the right side, putting the Gray Wolves in front.
Â
Northwestern Ohio tied the game in the third on a double and a single before taking the lead in the sixth with a lead-off home run by Kendall Benning. The Racers added another run in the frame on a two-out double, which proved to be all the insurance they would need.
Â
Lourdes loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but could not push across the tying runs.
Â
Waters finished the game with three hits while Kostick added two more as part of a 10-hit attack for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Hunter Conzelmann earned the complete game win (6-4) for Northwestern Ohio (17-11, 7-7 WHAC), striking out four without walking anyone.Â
Tiana Card (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea-Midpark H.S.) suffered the loss (2-8), yielding nine hits without a walk in a complete game performance.
Â
Lourdes (6-20, 2-12) will continue its road trip on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind. To face Indiana Tech. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Warrior Park.
