The Lourdes men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 13-12 setback in double overtime on Wednesday evening to No. 2-ranked Madonna on Senior Night.
"Tonight was a great team effort all around," said head coach
Patrick Yannarelli following the contest. "We are extremely close to putting a complete game together and have to keep fighting to get there. I'm very proud of these seniors and the effort they put in."
Lourdes honored
Ian Paige (Flat Rock, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central) and
Collin O'Loughlin (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview), in a pregame senior night ceremony for their contributions to the program.
After Madonna (12-2, 5-2 WHAC) scored a quick goal to open the contest,
Nick Johnson (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) netted his first goal of the evening, knotting the game at 1-1 with just over three minutes elapsed in the first period.
The Crusaders scored a pair of goals to take a 3-1 advantage, but Johnson again gave Lourdes life, scoring his second goal of the game to end the first period and cut the deficit to 3-2 after one.
Following a Madonna goal, Lourdes began to take control as Johnson scored his third goal of the game to spark a 5-0 Lourdes run in the second period. Johnson scored three of the five goals in the run, while
Danny Benson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook) added a goal each to give Lourdes a 7-4 lead.
Madonna added a pair of goals to get within 7-6, but
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) found Campbell for a late goal to end the half and give Lourdes an 8-6 advantage at the break.
The two teams exchanged two goals each in the third quarter as Johnson and Campbell scored for Lourdes, giving the Gray Wolves a 10-8 lead heading into the final quarter.
Campbell scored early in the fourth quarter, but Lourdes found itself trailing 12-11 late in the period. The Lourdes defense caused a turnover with seconds remaining in regulation, giving
Collin Miller (Royal Oak, Mich./Shrine Catholic) the opportunity to score with just three seconds left to send the contest to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Madonna found the back of the cage in the second sudden death period to claim the 13-12 victory. The contest was the first double overtime game in program history.
Johnson led the Gray Wolf offense, netting six goals while Campbell added four goals. Gilhooly added a team-best three assists.
Chris Douds (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) spent the majority of the minutes in the cage for Lourdes, notching nine saves.
Lourdes will conclude the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. road trip to Michigan-Dearborn at Detroit Country Day School.
