The Lourdes men's lacrosse team ended regular season play in style, picking up a 15-7 victory on the road over Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon.
"Today was a great team win and we're very proud of the entire team," stated head coach
Patrick Yannarelli following the victory. "This team has had adversity thrown their way the entire season and handled it admirably. We are excited to be heading to the postseason."
Lourdes outscored Michigan-Dearborn (1-11, 1-7 WHAC) 4-0 in the first stanza to take a commanding lead. The Gray Wolves got goals from
Nick Johnson (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg),
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook),
Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) and
Blake Alexander (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) in the period.
Alexander opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals to push the Gray Wolf lead to 6-0 before the Wolverines were able to find the back of the cage for the first time with 11:00 left in the second quarter.
Campbell and Alexander then scored a pair of goals to extend the lead to 8-1, before
Danny Benson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) found the back of the net for the first time to push the lead to 9-1.
The Wolverines scored three of the next four goals, cutting the deficit to 10-4.
The UM-Dearborn offense answered a
Tyler Pezzot (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) goal midway through the third period, but Pezzot would again find the back of the cage to end the third period and extend the lead to 12-5.
After the Wolverines opened the final period with back-to-back goals, a pair of Johnson goals and a third goal from Pezzot sealed the victory as Lourdes went on to win 15-7.
Alexander led the Gray Wolf offense with four goals, while Johnson and Pezzot each added three goals.
Collin Miller (Royal Oak, Mich./Shrine Catholic) added a team-best 15 ground balls.
Tyler Hart (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) went the distance in the net and earned the victory, posting 12 saves.
With the victory, Lourdes (7-6, 3-5 WHAC) punched its ticket to the WHAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Gray Wolves will travel to the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The league office will release pairings for the tournament at a later date.
