No. 10 Siena Rallies to Down Lourdes in Lightning Delayed Contest

Lourdes jumped out to an early lead on Siena Heights on Wednesday evening, but Saints rallied to defeat the Gray Wolves 12-9 at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich. in a game delayed more than 90 minutes due to lightning.

The Gray Wolves scored the first three goals of the game, all off the stick of Hannah Merrick (South Lyon, Mich./East H.S.), and carried the 3-0 lead into the midway point of the opening half.

The 10th-ranked Saints responded with four consecutive goals to take the lead before Merrick struck again, tying the game at four with just over nine minutes to play before halftime.  Siena Heights took the lead back with back-to-back goals 25 seconds apart, before the game was delayed with severe storms in the area.

When play resumed, Claire Austin (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston H.S.) and Bella D'Arcy (Hartland, Mich./Hartland H.S.) registered back-to-back tallies, evening the game at the 3:31 mark.  Siena Heights closed the half on a 4-0 run though, taking a 10-6 advantage into the abbreviated intermission.

After neither team scored in the first 15 minutes of the second half, Merrick found the back of the cage for her fifth goal of the game.  D'Arcy then scored twice in a row, the second with just 5:46 to play, closing the gap to one, 10-9.

However, Siena Heights (7-8, 5-3 WHAC) scored two insurance goals late, the final tally by Jenna Sommerville, who scored six times, while holding the Gray Wolves off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Shots were even 27-27 for the night, with Lourdes holding a 22-18 edge on goal.  Jacque Pappadakes (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River H.S.) made six saves for the Gray Wolves while Mariah Smythe made 13 stops for the Saints.

Siena Heights had a 35-32 edge in ground balls and a 14-8 advantage in draw controls for the night.  Merrick had seven ground balls for Lourdes while Tiara Reed (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) added six along with three draw controls.

Lourdes (8-9, 5-3) will close out the regular season on Saturday morning, hosting fourth-ranked Indiana Tech.  The opening draw is set for 11 a.m. at Wildcat Stadium, with Senior Day activities taking place prior to the game.
