Lourdes closed out the 2019 season by hitting six home runs on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves split a doubleheader against Concordia (Mich.). The Gray Wolves won the opener 6-0 before falling 16-2 in game two at Cardinal Field.
The Gray Wolves used the long ball and a masterful pitching performance from
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) in the opener to register their first shutout since April 22, 2018 against Aquinas.
Brown went the distance, striking out 14 while scattering just six hits for the shutout win (3-2). He worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth, the only time the Cardinals had more than one base runner in an inning.
Lourdes hit four home runs in the game, including a pair by
Brandon Horman (Oregon, Ohio/Saint John's Jesuit H.S.), his first two collegiate round-trippers.
The Gray Wolves started the offense in the third, as
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) and
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) hit back-to-back home runs to start the scoring. Horman led off the fourth with a solo shot of his own and
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) singled home
Michael Davis (Whittier, Calif./California H.S.) later in the inning to make it 4-0.
Horman added to the lead in the sixth with another solo home run to lead off the frame and tripled home Gallo in the seventh to complete his 3-for-4, three RBI game.
Jacob Clark suffered the loss (3-4) for Concordia, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, and six hits in four innings on the hill, striking out six.
In game two, Concordia (34-16, 14-8 WHAC) scored the game's first seven runs before Gallo hit a solo home run in the fourth to put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard.
The Cardinals broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning before
Noah Hayes (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek H.S.) closed out the scoring for the Gray Wolves with a home run in the seventh.
Grant Steinborn went five innings for the win (8-1) for Concordia, allowing one run on three hits.
Kolby Rogge (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) took the loss (1-4) for Lourdes (15-24, 9-13), yielding eight runs, six earned, and eight hits in four innings of work.
