The Lourdes women's lacrosse team picked up its second straight win with a convincing 16-5 victory over Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Aquinas on Wednesday evening.
"We have really been focusing on working together as a unit," head coach
Alyssa Shaver said following the victory. "I think everything started to click today and we were able to get a big win in the conference."
Aquinas (2-7, 1-3 WHAC) struck first in the contest with just 2:46 gone in the first half to take an early 1-0 lead.
Brianna Nantz (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) scored the equalizer at the 24:01 mark of the first half, but the Saints would score again to regain a one-goal advantage.
From there,
Hannah Merrick (South Lyon, Mich./East) and
Bella D'Arcy (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) netted back-to-back goals respectively to help Lourdes take a 5-2 lead with 11:37 left in the first half.
After Nantz found
Emiliana Taylor (Grainger, Ind./Saint Joseph) for a goal, D'Arcy and Merrick ended the first half with a pair of unassisted goals to push the lead to 8-2 at the intermission.
D'Arcy wasted no time in the second half finding the back of the net as she extended the lead to 9-2 after receiving a pass from Nantz with 28:24 left in the contest.
Lourdes and Aquinas exchanged four goals over the next 10 minutes as
Tiara Reed (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) and
Ashley Hunt (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May) each scored for the Gray Wolves.
From there, D'Arcy scored three of the final five goals, while Merrick and Nantz each added a goal to help lift Lourdes to the 16-5 victory.
D'Arcy's seven goals in the contest is tied for the fourth best single-game mark in program history. Merrick also added a hat trick for Lourdes with four goals.
Jacque Pappadakes (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) earned the victory in the cage, stopping eight shots for the Gray Wolves.
Reed picked up a game-high seven ground balls and made her presence felt defensively with six caused turnovers in the victory.
The Gray Wolves (6-7, 3-1 WHAC) return to action next Wednesday at 5 p.m. as they host No. 9-ranked Concordia (Mich.) at Wildcat Stadium.
