The Lourdes baseball team picked up a 6-5 victory over Cleary before falling 11-10 in the nightcap at Lake Trust Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"The team really competed well today," said head coach
Jeremy Snow following the contest. "Liam gave us a great effort on the mound and was really sharp all day. I think our offense responded well to build a good enough lead for Liam to finish out and earn the victory."
Â
Lourdes scored first in game one as
Michael Davis (Whittier, Cal./California) scored on a wild pitch in the second inning, giving the Gray Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Â
Cleary (7-13, 2-8 WHAC) answered back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. The lead didn't last long as
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield) and
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) each scored in the fifth inning giving Lourdes a 3-2 lead.
Â
Gallo and
Braden Halford (Port Hope, Ont./Saint Mary's) each plated a run in the seventh and eighth innings to put Lourdes ahead 6-3. The Cougars scored two late runs in the ninth, but the Gray Wolf defense would hold on for the 6-5 victory.
Â
Liam Bloom (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton) tossed a complete game and fanned three batters on his way to his first victory of the season.
Â
Lourdes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game as
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales),
Austin Oulds (Chatham, Ont./Chatham Kent),
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start), and Davis all scored over the first two innings.
Â
Cleary would score eight unanswered runs to take an 8-4 lead through five innings. The Gray Wolf offense cut the lead to 8-5 in the sixth inning as Childress hit an RBI-double to left field. The Cougars were able to answer in the bottom half of the inning scoring two more runs to push their lead to 10-5.
Â
Lourdes plated five runs in the seventh and eighth inning to knot the game at 10-10 heading into the ninth inning.
Â
Cleary would hit a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth to claim the 11-10 victory.
Â
"Game two was a tough loss for us," Snow continued. "That's our ninth loss by three or less runs and as a coach you know that we are so close every time. Hopefully we can learn from this and find ourselves on the other end moving forward. This team doesn't quit and that's something to be proud of."
Â
Childress finished 3-for-4 at the plate in game two with an RBI and run scored while Denman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Â
The Gray Wolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Michigan-Dearborn in a twinbill at Mercy Field.
