Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, but Lourdes fourth quarter comeback attempt fell short on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves dropped a 77-68 decision to Rochester (Mich.) inside of Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.
Semler played all 40 minutes on the afternoon, and easily surpassed her previous career best of 17 points scored earlier this year against Cornerstone.
Lourdes battled back from a 16-point deficit entering the final quarter to pull within five, but was unable to complete the comeback bid. Trailing 60-44 entering the final 10 minutes, the Gray Wolves started the final period on a 13-2 run in just over three minutes. Semler and
Mirandia Green (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) both had five points during the spurt.
It was still a six-point game, 71-65, with one minute to play but the Warriors made six free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
"It was a great team effort," head coach
John Kenger said afterwards. "We played a tough three quarters. We need to keep growing as a team and good things will be on the horizon."
After Lourdes scored the game's first basket, Rochester scored the next 14 points to take the lead which it would not relinquish the rest of the way. The Warriors maintained a 12-point advantage, 39-27, at the break and extended it to 16 heading to the fourth before the Gray Wolves made their rally.
Green scored 14 points and
Mary Liedel (Erie, Mich./Mason H.S.) added 12 points for the Gray Wolves as Lourdes had three players finish with double figures. Lourdes committed just 14 turnovers but shot 34.9% from the floor.
Devan Valko led Rochester (6-13, 4-5 WHAC) with 18 points while Lexey Tobel added 17 more. The Warriors shot 43.6% from the field to offset 24 turnovers.
Lourdes (4-13, 3-7) will remain on the road Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Southfield, Mich. to battle Lawrence Tech. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside Ridler Field House.
