For the third time in the last six games, 13
th-ranked Lourdes went to overtime on Wednesday evening, but ultimately came up short 86-78 to the University of Michigan-Dearborn inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"I am not happy with our play in the second half or overtime," head coach
Dennis Hopson said following the game. "We didn't share the ball or defend on the other end."
Â
The Wolverines came out quick, building an early 20-11 lead after making 6-of-8 three-point attempts in the game's first seven minutes. The lead was still nine, 30-21, at the 6:40 mark when Lourdes answered with a run of its own.
Â
The Gray Wolves closed the half by scoring 23 of the final 29 points to jump in front, including the final eight points of the stanza to take a 44-36 lead into the locker room.Â
Deuce Martin (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview H.S.) tallied 15 points in the first half, including three triples, helping pace the Lourdes comeback.
Â
"Deuce was a bright spot for us tonight," Hopson added. "I'm happy with the way that he played."
Â
Lourdes lead grew to 10 after two technical free throws to start the second half before Michigan-Dearborn battled back. A 10-2 run by the Wolverines pulled the visitors to within two just five minutes into the period. The Gray Wolves maintained the lead until a three-pointer at the 10-minute mark gave Michigan-Dearborn a 57-55 advantage.
Â
The Gray Wolves took the lead back, building an eight-point edge, 71-63, with 2:42 remaining, but would not score the remainder of regulation. Michigan-Dearborn pulled within two with 41 seconds to play and tied the game on a pair of free throws by Cody Kegley with 8.4 ticks left on the clock, forcing overtime.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn led the entire overtime, as Kegley made a three a minute into the period. Lourdes cut the deficit to one on a bucket by
