Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) tossed a four-hit shutout against Missouri Baptist on Tuesday as the Gray Wolves defeated the Spartans 1-0 after falling earlier in the day 7-4 to Hannibal-LaGrange at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.
"We played 11 good innings of softball today after the first three," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We got a strong pitching performance with solid defense behind her."
Applegate did not walk anyone and struck out one in her 60-pitch effort to earn her first collegiate win (1-1). The shutout was the first for the Gray Wolves since a 16-0 win over Cornerstone on April 26, 2016 and the first 1-0 shutout victory since April 4 against Rochester (Mich.) that same season.
Lourdes plated its lone run just three batters into the game.
Shylee Schmeltz (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) led off being hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a double by
Erin Manley (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.).
The Spartans threatened in the second, putting the first runners aboard, but Applegate retired the next 13 in a row in order before allowing another hit in the sixth.
Lourdes had five hits total against Missouri Baptist (6-10), with Delissa Dennison allowing just the one run while striking out seven in the complete game loss (1-4).
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) went 3-for-3 in the game.
In the opener against Hannibal-LaGrange (2-9), the Trojans built an early 2-0 lead after scoring unearned runs in both of the first two innings. The Trojans then took advantage of two walks and two hit batters along with a wild pitch in the third to score five more times on just three hits.
Lourdes got a run back in the bottom of the third as
Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.) delivered a RIB single.
With two outs in the fourth, the Gray Wolves scored three times, with Schmeltz and
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) both delivered RBI hits. Lourdes was unable to score again the rest of the way though in the setback.
Sicily Johnston went the distance in the circle for the win (2-3), allowing three earned runs and 10 Lourdes hits while striking out two. Gauthier had the only multi-hit game for the Gray Wolves as eight of the nine starter tallied a safety.
Jenna Harris (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West H.S.) suffered the loss (1-1), yielding five earned runs and four hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Lourdes (2-4) will have a day off before returning to the diamond on Thursday morning in Kissimmee. The Gray Wolves will face Fisher at 10 a.m. and Carlow at 12:15 p.m.
