Lourdes began its spring trip on Friday, defeating Talladega 13-1 before dropping a 5-0 decision to fifth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett at the Grizzly Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville, Ga.
Â
The bats were alive in the opener, as the Gray Wolves pounded out 17 hits, with
Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) going 4-for-5 to lead the way.Â
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) drove home four runs.
Â
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) started the scoring with a home run in the opening inning. Ammons had a two-run single in the second as part of a four-run frame while
Michael Lawniczak (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) doubled home two more in the third to make it 7-0 Gray Wolves.
Â
RBI singles by
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) and Gargus in the fourth added to the scoring before Gargus doubled home two in the sixth. Lourdes tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh before Talladega (10-11) plated one in the bottom of the frame, but the Gray Wolves closed the contest out with the 10-run rule.
Â
Braxton McKart (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) sparkled on the mound, allowing just three hits and no runs in six innings of work to earn the win (2-1). He struck out five and walked just one.
Â
"Braxton came out and really competed on the mound," head coach
Josh Bradford said after the opener. "I didn't think that he had his best stuff today, but he figured out a way to give us six innings of shutout ball.  Offensively, we got contributions all the way through the lineup. Every guy had a hit and either scored or had an RBI. We really stuck to our approach and were able to score in six of the seven innings."
Â
Ricardo Blackman suffered the loss (2-1) for the Tornadoes, yielding seven runs, four of which were earned, and eight hits in three innings of work.
Â
In the night game against the Grizzlies, Hunter Peck limited Lourdes to just two hits in a complete game shutout (4-0), striking out 18 Gray Wolves. Â
Â
Kolby Rogge (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) tried to answer, yielding just two runs and seven hits in five innings of work. He struck out four.
Â
You have got to give credit to their guy on the mound," Bradford said. "He was tough. I thought our starter was pretty good, too. Kolby went out and gave us five quality innings and kept us right there. We just were not able to get anything going offensively."
Â
Georgia Gwinnett (19-2) single runs in the second and fifth to jump in front and added three insurance runs in the sixth inning.Â
Â
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) had a double to extend his hitting streak to eight straight games for one of the Gray Wolves' two hits.Â
Â
Lourdes (5-3) will face Talladega again on Saturday afternoon in Lawrenceville, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
