No. 7 Lourdes Unable to Upset No. 1 Grand View

Lourdes began its three-match trip in the state of Iowa on Monday evening, falling 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 to top-ranked Grand View inside of the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

"We battled pretty well, our hitting was efficient, but our defense wasn't able to keep them from scoring," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "Luckily, we get a chance to get back onto the court tomorrow to fix a few things."

Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) hit .524 with 12 kills for the Gray Wolves while Ricardo Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco H.S.) added 10 more while swining at a .444 clip.  Evan Gebert (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider H.S.) posted a team-high 13 kills.

Henrique Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco H.S.) handed out 32 assists while leading an offense that hit .342 on the night.  Defensively, Guga Heidrich (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado H.S.) tallied a team-high nine digs as Lourdes outdug Grand View 22-20.

Trailing 12-9 in the opening set, Lourdes scored four straight points, and eight of the next 10, to build a 17-14 advantage.  The Vikings fought back with a 5-1 run to retake the lead on the way to winning the stanza.

In the second, the set was tied 15-15 when Grand View went on a 7-3 run to pull in front by four on the way to building a 2-0 lead in the match.  The third set had 20 ties and nine lead changes.  With Lourdes in front 19-18, the Vikings scored four of the next five points to pull in front 23-20, only to see the Gray Wolves respond.  Lourdes scored three straight to even the match, but the hosts would pull out the win with back-to-back kills to close out the match.

Felix Chapman led Grand View (20-1) with 20 kills and hit .366 while Raffy Polanco added 14 kills and a .455 hitting mark.  Francisco Arredondo handed out 43 assists for the Vikings while leading the offense that hit .435 for the match.  Defensively, Erick Villar posted nine digs.
