Gabe Scott's (Curtis, Ohio/Curtis H.S.) walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth in game two on Saturday afternoon lifted Lourdes to a doubleheader sweep over Bethel (Ind.) 6-4 and 10-9 at Mercy Field to conclude the fall portion of the Gray Wolves' schedule.
"These were two more good team wins," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "We got contributions from a lot of different guys today, both at the plate and on the mound. Just like last week, we battled through a couple bad innings, stuck to the plan, and were able to get a couple of big hits at the end to put us on top."
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third of game one,
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) doubled home
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) to tie the game and scored one batter later on Scott's RBI single.
The Pilots tied the game in the fourth before the Gray Wolves plated four in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) doubled home the go-ahead run before Ammons hit a three-run home run to left, making it 6-2 Lourdes.
Bethel would score two unearned runs in the fifth to pull within two, but
Harrison Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
Jake Boyd (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson H.S.) earned his first win as a Gray Wolf, tossing 1.1 innings of relief of
Wyatt Smith (Sycamore, Ohio/Wynford H.S.), who started and struck out seven in 3.2 innings of work.
Ammons, Haugh, and Scott each had two hits as part of the 10-hit attack for Lourdes in the opener. Chase Lotsbach suffered the loss in the opener for Bethel, yielding six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings on the hill.
Lourdes started fast in game two, as
Nick DiGennaro (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola H.S.) hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first to put the Gray Wolves in front 4-0.
Bethel scored one in the top of the second before a 41-minute rain delay and added another out of the break to pull within two before plating four in the third to pull in front 6-4. The Pilots would increase the lead to 8-4 with two more runs in the fourth.
The Gray Wolves loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth before back-to-back sacrifice flies by Ammons and Haugh made it an 8-6 game.
Trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth, two hit batters and two walks plated a run before DiGennaro capped his six RBI game with a two-run single to tie the contest at nine.
Neither team would score in the seventh before Scott hit an opposite field home run for the walk-off win in the eighth.
Max Lojko (Barrie, Ont./ESC Nouvelle-Alliance H.S.) tossed two scoreless innings for the in while Alex Stout suffered the loss.
Lourdes (4-0) will have several months off before returning to the diamond in February.
