Lourdes won the opening set on Wednesday evening, but Siena Heights rebounded to take the next three in an 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 victory over the Gray Wolves inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"We started off playing well but we got complacent and didn't raise our level to meet that of our opponent," head coach
Greg Reitz said after the match.
Lourdes committed just two errors and hit .351 in the opening set in taking the early lead. With the set tied at 17, the Gray Wolves scored eight of the final nine points of the stanza, including the final six.
Siena Heights evened the match with a win in the second. A 10-1 run put the Saints in front 18-10 and the visitors withstood a late Lourdes rally in which the Gray Wolves pulled to within three, 22-19.
The Gray Wolves led 11-10 in set three before Siena Heights scored four of the next five points to take the lead for good. The Saints had 19 kills in the set.
In set four, Lourdes jumped out to a 16-10 lead only for the Saints to battle back. Siena Heights scored six of the next seven points to pull within one, the beginning of a 9-2 run. The set was tied at 19 when Siena Heights scored the next three points and never allowed the Gray Wolves to pull back even.
Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) had a match-high 16 kills for Lourdes while adding 10 digs defensively.
Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) and
McKenna Hall (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) each had double-doubles as well with 11 kills each. McBride had 12 digs while Hall added 11.
Katey Stakolich (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) ad
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) each had double-doubles as well. Stakolich dished out 24 assists and had 13 digs while Plasencio had 11 helpers and a match-high 30 digs.
Yasmin Assis (Salto, Brazil/Antonio Alves Aranha) handed out 10 assists in the fourth set.
Aline Marinelo led Siena Heights (14-4, 9-3 WHAC) with 14 kills and hit .400 while Payton Osborne recorded 28 digs for the Saints.
Lourdes (9-13, 5-8) takes to the road this weekend beginning on Friday evening with a match at Aquinas. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
