Lourdes picked up its first result ever against a NAIA top-25 foe on Saturday evening, playing 12
th-ranked Aquinas to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
"This was a brilliant performance this evening by the girls," head coach
Jackie Phillips said afterwards. "Earning the draw with the 12
th ranked team in the nation is another testament to their resiliency, tenacity, and work rate that they display day in and day out."
Â
The Gray Wolves struck quickly. After a shot attempt hit the hand of an Aquinas defender in the penalty box,
Abigail Mann (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) stepped up and converted the penalty kick just 6:48 into the match to give Lourdes the 1-0 lead.
Â
The advantage was short-lived though, as the Saints drew a penalty kick of their own in similar fashion. Hannah Crum converted her opportunity just 47 seconds after Mann's goal to even the match at one.
Â
The match would stay even heading into halftime, despite a 14-3 shot advantage by Aquinas. The Saints continued the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Gray Wolves 10-1. Aquinas would draw another penalty kick opportunity with just over 30 minutes to play in the match, but
Emmy Rodger (Romeo, Mich./Romeo H.S.) made the save.
Â
Rodger would make 11 saves on the evening to earn the draw as Aquinas (10-1-1, 4-0-1 WHAC) finished the match with a 29-7 shot advantage and had all 11 corner kick opportunities.
Â
Lourdes (6-1-5, 3-0-2) remains home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Madonna. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
