Lourdes carried a lead for nearly 70 minutes on Saturday afternoon, but the University of Northwestern Ohio rallied to tie the match late before defeating the Gray Wolves 2-1 in overtime at Racer Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.
Â
"I was incredibly proud of the boys today," head coach
Matt Johnson said after the match. "To go on the road in a knockout playoff game against a top team in UNOH and match them for 90-plus minutes, it was a tremendous effort. The game itself wasn't always pretty, but both teams played at an incredibly high tempo, and the level of consistent ball pressure made it tough to find any comfortable rhythm with the ball. It is tremendously disappointing to lose a game that we had some really good chances to win, but we can walk away with our heads held high based upon the effort."
Â
Lourdes (9-8-1) jumped in front quickly.Â
Savio Adams (Cape Town, South Africa/Zeekoevlei) scored his fifth goal of the season just 1:56 into the match. On a free kick the ball bounced in front of and over the diving Racer netminder Rafael Lima.
Â
The match remained 1-0 Lourdes into intermission despite Northwestern Ohio holding a 5-3 shot advantage. The Racers would outshoot the Gray Wolves 9-5 in the second half on the way to evening the match.
Â
Mamadou Diallo headed in a Cameron Power corner kick with 18:52 to play in regulation to even the match at one, forcing the extra session.
Â
The Racers had all four shot attempts, and three corners, in the overtime period before Limamu Mohammed scored on a rebound 7:08 into the extra period, giving UNOH the victory.
Â
Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) made six saves in net for the Gray Wolves while Lima had four stops for Northwestern Ohio (9-5-3). The Racers finished the match with an 18-8 shot advantage.
