Competing inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for the first time in program history on Thursday evening, Lourdes picked up three individual victories in five contested matches, but ultimately fell to 12
th-ranked Indiana Tech 29-14.
"It felt good to see the girls have some breakthroughs," head coach
Kate Hill said afterwards. "We're finally starting to get the experience necessary for success. I was very pleased with how the girls competed tonight."
Celebrating Senior Day for
Theresa Rankin (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake H.S.), the 10
th-ranked wrestler at 123 pounds scored a 10-0 tech fall in her 130-pound match against Korissa Vanover, needing just 52 seconds to complete her match, improving her to 3-1 on the season. Vanover entered the match ranked 20
th at 123 pounds.
Akemi Garcia (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek H.S.) scored the first fall in program history at 136 pounds. The freshman pinned Alexandra Mireles at the 4:02 mark in the second period for her first collegiate victory.
Stefana Jelacic (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Chandler H.S.) improved to 4-0 on the season with her third tech fall, posting a 10-0 win over Tehani Soares at 116 pounds. Jelacic, ranked third at 116 pounds nationally ended her match against the fourth-ranked 109-pound grappler in the country with nine seconds remaining in the opening period.
Indiana Tech earned a tech fall victory at 109 pounds and added a fall at 123 pounds in the other contested contests. The Warriors added four forfeit victories, with 191 pounds being a double forfeit.
Lourdes has now concluded the dual portion of the 2020-2021 season. The Gray Wolves will return to action on Saturday, February 20, competing at the Mid-South Conference Championships. Action begins at 10 a.m. inside of Ephram White Park Gym in Bowling Green, Ky.
