Game Recap: Baseball |

Lourdes Scores 23 Runs in Two Games at No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett

Lourdes had the offense going against third-ranked Georgia Gwinnett, but unfortunately so did the Grizzlies this weekend as the Gray Wolves suffered 15-10 and 17-13 defeats on the road at the Grizzley Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville, Ga.

"I have to give the guys credit, they battled the whole weekend," head coach Josh Bradford said afterwards.  "I like where we are at.  We need to clean up the defense a bit and pitch a little better, but we are going to be okay."

The first game on Sunday was the completion of Saturday night's game that was suspended due to a power outage with Georgia Gwinnett in front 7-1 in the bottom of the third inning.  The Grizzlies took advantage of eight Lourdes errors, scoring seven unearned runs in the game.

Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) homered in the second inning for the Gray Wolves' lone run before the power outage.

Trailing 8-2 in the sixth, Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) had a run-scoring double and Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) followed with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to five.  The Grizzlies responded in the bottom of the frame with two of their own to push the lead back to 10-3.

The Gray Wolves took advantage of three walks and two hit batters to score times in the seventh, again only to see Georgia Gwinnett answer with five in the bottom of the inning.  Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) added a two-run single in the eighth as Lourdes tried to make a late comeback that fell short.

Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) had two hits in the game for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves managed nine total.  Ammons drove in three runs while Childress finished with two RBI.

Livingston Morris and Tate Kight both went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in for the Grizzlies in the opener.

Klay Allen earned the win (1-0) out of the bullpen for Georgia Gwinnett, allowing two runs and four hits in three innings of work.  Jagger Geck (Algonac, Mich./Algonac H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), yielding seven runs, three of which were earned, and eight hits in two innings.

In game two of the day, Georgia Gwinnett (8-2) plated three runs over the first two innings before Lourdes found the scoreboard in the third.  Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) and Childress each had RBI hits before Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) added a two-run single to put the Gray Wolves in front 4-3.

The Grizzlies answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and took a 6-4 lead to the fifth.  A pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth allowed Lourdes to even the game at six before the Gray Wolves took the lead on back-to-back singles by Childress and Ammons in the sixth.

Again, Georgia Gwinnett answered, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Gargus had another hit in the seventh, driving home two more runs as part of a four-run inning, giving the Lourdes catcher four RBI for the game.

The Grizzlies responded with four runs in both the seventh and eighth before Lourdes tacked on one final tally in the ninth.

Ammons had three hits while Scott, Childress, Gargus, and Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Catholic Central H.S.) had two hits each as part of a 15-hit attack for the gray Wolves.

Griffin Keller went 3-for-4 with six RBI for Georgia Gwinnett.

Hunter Caudelle earned the win (1-0) for the Grizzlies in relief, tossing the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one run and three hits.  Jacob Nastally (Canton, Mich./Salem H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), yielding seven runs, four earned, and four hits in two innings on the hill.

Lourdes (0-3) will head to Midway, Ky. next weekend for a four-game weekend series with Midway.  First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tracy Farmer-Don Ball Field.
