Lourdes closed out its four-match road trip on Sunday evening dropping a 14-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21 match to Siena Heights inside the SHU Fieldhouse in Adrian, Mich.
"We battled for a while, but it just wasn't enough to get the win," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We need to get back to work to prepare for our next match this week."
The Gray Wolves came out fast, taking an early 11-3 lead before extending the advantage of 23-10 in the in opening set. Lourdes hit .308 in the stanza with 16 kills while limiting the Saints to just eight. In set two, Siena Heights never trailed, despite the Gray Wolves keeping the set close. Lourdes trailed just 17-16 before the Saints went on a 5-0 spurt to pull away and even the contest.
The third set had 11 ties and six lead changes as both teams looked to forge ahead in the match. With the set tied at 22, Siena Heights scored the next two points before getting a sideout to end the frame. The Saints hit a blistering .448 with 14 kills and just one attack error in the fourth on the way to securing the win. Trailing 23-16, Lourdes tried to make a late comeback, pulling within three, but ran out of time.
Vanessa Villarreal (Monroe, Mich./Saint Mary Central Catholic H.S.) put down a match-high 23 kills and hit .395 to lead the Lourdes offense while
McKenna Hall (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) added 15 kills and 10 digs.
Yasmin Assis (Salto, Brazil/Antonio Alves Aranha) ran an offense that hit .192 on the night while handing out 51 assists. She also added 10 digs defensively.
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S) recorded a team-high 15 digs while
Michaela Eisenhauer (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta H.S.) registered four blocks.
Aline Marinelo led Siena Heights (3-1, 3-1 WHAC) with 12 kills and hit .370 while Sam Huddleston tallied 15 digs.
Lourdes (0-5, 0-4) will look for its first victory of the season at home on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves host Madonna. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in a makeup match from a weather postponement on Feb. 16.
