Lourdes Forces Overtime Before Falling to Concordia (Mich.) in WHAC Semis

Lourdes rallied from six down in the two minutes to force overtime on Gabby Stover's (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington H.S.) put back with 6.4 seconds to play, but Concordia (Mich.) prevailed in the extra session, defeating the Gray Wolves 91-84 inside of Cardinal Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich. in the semifinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.

"This has been a crazy season all around, and I am so proud of the girls coming together when it mattered the most," head coach John Kenger said after the game.  "This group has set the standard of what we want from this program moving forward.  I am thankful for Sara (Semler) and Lauryn (Gray) and everything they gave to this program.  We are going to miss them."

The two schools knew each other well, as they met for the third time in five days on Saturday.  With the game tied at 11 midway through the opening quarter, Lourdes looked anything like the tournament's eighth seed.  The Gray Wolves went on a 13-2 run which carried into the second quarter to build a 24-13 lead.

The lead grew to as many as 14, 34-20, following a Shae Pedroza (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) triple.  Concordia battled back toward the end of the half, pulling within eight, 44-36, at the break.

Lourdes committed just four first half turnovers and shot 54.5% from the floor over the opening 20 minutes.  Pedroza scored 16 points on 6-of-7 from the field while Mary Liedel (Erie, Mich./Mason H.S.) added nine more on 4-of-5 shooting.

The Cardinals came out the second half scoring the first five points to cut the lead to three just 30 seconds out of the locker room.  Concordia eventually cut its deficit to one twice in the third quarter, but each time Lourdes was able to reextend the lead, eventually taking a 66-59 advantage to the fourth.

Concordia opened the fourth quarter with a 19-7 run, taking the lead on a deep three-pointer by Katie Snow with 4:40 to play, putting the Cardinals in front 74-71.  The lead grew six, 79-73 and the Cardinals had the ball when Lourdes got a stop defensively.

Liedel started the comeback with a jumper with 1:40 to play.  After a stop on defense, Stover grabbed her own offensive board and was fouled with 52.6 seconds to play and converted both free throws.  The Gray Wolves forced another missed Concordia grabbed the offensive board before turning the ball over by stepping on the sidelines. With 19.8 ticks on the clock.

Out of a timeout, Stover put up a layup attempt, missed, and grabbed her own board and cored with 6.4 to play, tying the game.  Lourdes forced a miss by Snow inside as time expired, and the teams headed to overtime.

The Cardinals led the entire extra session, as Allyson Hunt made two free throws followed by a layup after a Lourdes turnover.  Pedroza made a three with 3:28 to play to pull the Gray Wolves within one, 83-82, but that was Lourdes' field goal of the game.  Back-to-back baskets by Snow pushed the lead back to five and the Cardinals made four free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Lourdes committed just eight turnovers for the game and finished shooting 41.3% from the floor but made just 5-of-24 (20.9%) in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Pedroza led Lourdes with 21 points while Liedel added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Kailani Broyles (Massillon, Ohio/Washington H.S.) added 16 points and Erica Cary (Central City, Ky./Muhlenberg County H.S.) chipped in 11 as both came off the bench.  Leah Goodwin (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg H.S.) added 10 points as the Gray Wolves finished with five players scoring in double figures for the first time this season.
