A goal with less than six minutes to play in the match proved to be the difference on Monday afternoon as Lourdes opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 1-0 setback to Holy Cross (Ind.) inside Total Sports in Rossford, Ohio.
Â
"We didn't take advantage of our chances and that came back and bit us in the end," head coach
Matt Johnson said following the match. "They are a hard-working, organized team and they really worked for their result."
Â
The Gray Wolves controlled possession for a majority of the match, outshooting the Saints 5-4 in the opening stanza which ended scoreless. Lourdes had several quality chances in the second half, however Victor Villareal turned aside all six shots he faced to earn the shutout.
Â
Holy Cross finally broke through at the 84:10 mark as Raymond Giang headed in a corner from Gabe Nyenka for the lone tally of the afternoon.
Â
Despite a 12-9 shot advantage, Lourdes was never able to find the equalizer. The Gray Wolves also held a 7-5 edge in corner kick opportunities.Â
Anthony Samuel (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago/Chaguanas H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with four shot attempts, two of which were on net.
Â
Jorge Mendoza (Houston, Texas/Houston Heights H.S.) made three saves in goal for the Gray Wolves in the setback.
Â
