Kerstyn Williams (Taylor, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) set Lourdes University's career shutout mark with her seventh clean sheet of her career on Monday and the Gray Wolf offense erupted for three goals in a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross (Ind.) inside of Total Sports in Rossford, Ohio.
Â
Williams made six saves on her way to her first shutout of the season but had to work until the final seconds for her shutout. With one second remaining in the match, Holy Cross (0-1) was awarded a penalty kick. The senior netminder dove to her left to make the stop, preserving the clean sheet.
Â
"Congrats to Williams for setting the record," head coach
Jackie Phillips said after the match. "This was a great effort and win to start the spring. The girls are committed not only to the process but also their team and it is beginning to show."
Â
Lourdes, which scored just two goals in three matches in the fall, found the back of the net twice before intermission on Monday.Â
Katie Varney (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) took advantage of a Holy Cross turnover and fired a blast from 35 yards out over goalkeeper Catherine Parisi to put the Gray Wolves in front just 21:31 into the contest.
Â
With under 10 minutes remaining before halftime,
Jayla Musselman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) sent a corner into
Gianna Salatino (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic H.S.) who fed the ball back to
Chloe Shaffer (Rossford, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) who scored her first goal of the season. For Salatino, the assist was her first collegiate point.
Â
Musselman added a goal of her own with just over six minutes to play in the match, taking a pass from Shaffer and scoring in the upper right corner to increase the Lourdes advantage to 3-0.
Â
Lourdes finished with a 21-20 shot advantage, with Parisi making eight stops in net for the Saints. The Gray Wolves also had a 6-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Â
Lourdes (1-5) will head to Crestview Hills, Ky. on Saturday afternoon to face Thomas More. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at BB&T Stadium.
