Fifth-ranked Lourdes took the opening set in Tuesday evening's battle of NAIA top-10 schools, but 10
th-ranked Indiana Tech rallied to defeat the Gray Wolves 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-22 inside of the Schaffer Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
"We did not play well enough on our side of the net to win this match," head coach
Greg Reitz said after the match. "We played most of set one well and then gave them hope, which we took back for most of set two. Then they took it from us, and we could not get it back."
Lourdes started the match quickly, scoring seven of the first nine points and never trailed in the opening set. The Gray Wolves held a 24-18 lead before holding on for the two-point win. In set two, the Gray Wolves held a 20-12 advantage and led 24-20 before the Warriors fought off four match points, scoring six straight to even the match at one.
The Gray Wolves never led in set three and committed 10 attack errors while forcing Indiana Tech into just three mistakes. The Warriors jumped out to a 15-7 lead and did not allow Lourdes back in the set. The Gray Wolves led 10-8 in set four before four consecutive points by the hosts allowed Indiana Tech to pull in front, a lead the Warriors would not relinquish the rest of the match.
Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) led Lourdes with 21 kills and hit .229 while
Henrique Gehrke (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao Do Rio Branco) handed out 35 assists for an offense that hit just .113 on the night.
Guga Heidrich (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) tallied a team-high 14 digs defensively.
Daynte Stewart led Indiana Tech (7-1, 3-0 WHAC) with 12 kills and 11 digs for a double-double while Raekwon Rogers hit .444 with 10 kills and added seven blocks. The Warriors outblocked Lourdes 12-6 for the match.
Lourdes (4-1, 3-1) will have 10 days off before returning home to host Saint Xavier on Feb. 19. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
