Rochester Rallies to Top Lourdes in Five Sets

Lourdes wrapped up its three-match homestand on Friday evening, suffering a 17-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-12 setback to Rochester (Mich.) as the Warriors rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat the Gray Wolves inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"We played well in the first set and then never reached that level of play after that," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "We lost an important match in conference play tonight."

The Gray Wolves never trailed in the opening set, putting down 17 kills and hitting .310 while limiting the Warriors to just seven kills in the stanza.  Lourdes took an early 10-4 lead and never allowed Rochester to climb back.  In set two, a 6-2 run midway through the frame allowed Lourdes to build a 15-8 lead on the way to taking a 2-0 advantage in the match.  The Gray Wolves limited the Warriors to -.026 hitting in the set.

Rochester's offense took over in the final three sets as the Warriors committed just six attack errors to end the match.  Rochester took control early in the third, building a quick 8-4 lead.  The margin remained in the three-to-five-point range throughout the set until a late 5-0 spurt by the Warriors allowed the visitors to extend the match.

In the fourth, the Warriors put down 13 kills with just two miscues and used a late 5-0 run to pull in front for good after the set was tied at 16.  Set five saw Rochester put down just five kills, but the Warriors forced six attack errors from the Gray Wolves to complete the comeback.  With the set timed at 10, Lourdes committed several miscues down the stretch.

Vanessa Villarreal (Monroe, Mich./Saint Mary Central Catholic H.S.) led Lourdes with 16 kills while the Gray Wolves' two middles, Michaela Eisenhauer (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta H.S.) and Rafa Borges (Uberlandia, Brazil/CESEC) each hit .400.  Eisenhauer had 10 kills while Borges added 11.  Kortney Ellison (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) also finished in double figures with 10 kills.

Yasmin Assis (Salto, Brazil/Antonio Alves Aranha) and Megan Vayansky (Pickerington, Ohio/North H.S.) each handed out 26 assists while leading an offense that hit .183 for the night.

Defensively, Assis completed her double-double with 16 digs while Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) tallied 15 more.  Quinn Yondo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.) had 12 digs and McKenna Hall (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) added 11 more.  Eisenhauer and Ellison each were involved in four blocks for the match.

Olivia Francis led Rochester (4-14, 1-11 WHAC) with nine kills while Carly Rodman had 21 digs.

Lourdes (3-9, 3-8) will take to the road on Saturday evening, as the Gray Wolves travel to Livonia, Mich. to face Madonna.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
