Upcoming in Gray Wolves Softball: Lourdes returns home to Gray Wolf Field this weekend to begin a six-game homestand. The Gray Wolves will host Calumet for a doubleheader on Friday afternoon before entertaining Midway for a Sunday twinbill.
Head Coach Jo Ann Gordon: In her ninth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jo Ann Gordon has a 92-196 (.319) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In her 19th season overall as a head softball coach, Gordon has a 244-484 (.334) career mark. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Calumet won the only previous meeting against Lourdes 9-3 on March 5, 2018 in Leesburg, Fla. Friday will mark the first time the two schools will meet one another on someone's home turf. The Gray Wolves are 1-0 all-time against Midway, downing the Eagles 11-7 on March 8, 2018 in Leesburg, Fla. This will also be the first time they have played one another on one of their campuses.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes forced Ohio Christian to 10 innings on Saturday before dropping a 12-11 decision.
Ashley Riley had three hits while also pitching five innings. In Saturday's second game, Lourdes rallied late against Goshen before falling 4-3 in a game that was called after six innings due to darkness.
Annalisse Palma had two hits for the Gray Wolves. In Sunday's game against Goshen, Lourdes managed just three hits in a 13-0 setback. The Gray Wolves had four hits in game two, dropping a 3-1 decision to Ohio Christian. On Tuesday, the Gray Wolves again managed just three hits, falling at Thomas More 3-0.
Scouting Calumet: The Crimson Wave have dropped three straight games after falling in both ends of a doubleheader at Southeastern 2-1 and 5-1 on Saturday. Calumet is batting .204 as a team while opponents are hitting .272 against them.
Scouting Midway: The Eagles dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Campbellsville on Tuesday afternoon, falling 2-0 and 9-2 at home. Trinity Baker is hitting a team-leading .357 with nine runs batted in while Carson Flynn is swinging at a .348 clip with five doubles. As a team Midway is hitting .284. The pitching staff sports a 3.37 earned run average while opponents are hitting .310 against them. Madison Ludwig leads the way in the circle with a 5-4 record and a 2.48 ERA.
Swinging a Hot Bat: Ella Leonard leads Lourdes in batting this season with a .455 average (10-for-22). Her 10 hits are tied for the team lead while she also shares the team lead with four runs batted in. Leonard had a seven-game hitting that was snapped Tuesday at Thomas More, the longest by a Gray Wolf this season.
Double Duty: Ashley Riley has been the Gray Wolves' second leading hitter this year while also sporting the team's lowest earned run average in the circle. Riley is batting .412 (7-for-17) with four runs batted in at the plate. She enters the weekend on a five-game hitting streak, the longest active streak for any Lourdes hitter. In the circle, Riley has a 4.85 ERA while opponents are batting .304 against her in 13 innings of work.
Going Deep: Annalisse Palma has hit the only home run thus far this season for the Gray Wolves. The freshmen went deep on Sunday at Ohio Christian for her first collegiate extra base hit. Palma is batting .269 on the year but leads the Gray Wolves with six runs scored.
Logging Innings: Milena Applegate has pitched a team-high 27.1 innings this season, making four starts and a team-high seven appearances. She has posted a 5.38 ERA while the opposition is batting .303 against her.
Getting on Base: Kim Waters has made the most of her plate appearances this season. She has three hits in six official at bats for a .500 batting average but has also drawn six walks, giving her a .750 on base percentage.
A New Field: Lourdes christened its new home, Gray Wolf Field, with its doubleheader against Mount Vernon Nazarene on March 5. The field, which is shared with Sylvania Northview High School, was ready for play in 2020, however COVID-19 struck prior to Lourdes hosting any games.
On the All-Time Charts: Alyssa Ziegler swiped her 17th career base earlier this season, moving her into a tie for fifth on the Gray Wolves' career charts. She has matched
Megan Mosiniak's (2013-2016) and Jamie Newman's (2015-2016) totals while in a Lourdes uniform.
