Lourdes Splits with Calumet, Garners Season’s First Victory

After dropping Friday's opener 6-0 to Calumet at Gray Wolf Field, Lourdes rebounded in game two to defeat the Crimson Wave 4-2 for the Gray Wolves' first victory of the season.

Lourdes fell behind 2-0 in game two after Calumet (3-17) tallied single runs in both the second and third innings.  The Gray Wolves finally broke through in the bottom of the third as Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) walked and moved to second on an error.  A single by Hailey Cramer (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) put Lourdes on the scoreboard, plating the unearned run.

The Gray Wolves took advantage of another error in the fourth.  With runners on second and third, Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) lined a ball off the pitcher's foot that was ruled a catch at shortstop, but Kenzie Cooke (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes H.S.) crossed the plate to tie the game.  After an Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) single put runners on the corners, Katie Devine (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) scored as part of a double steal.

A final unearned run came across in the fifth as Waters singled home Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.), giving Lourdes a 4-2 lead.

Ashley Roth (LaRue, Ohio/Elgin H.S.) did the rest in the circle to earn the win (1-1).  She went the distance, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out two, both in the seventh inning.

In game one, Calumet tallied a pair of two out hits in the opening inning to take the early 1-0 lead.  The Crimson Wave added four runs in the sixth, batting around in the inning before tacking on an insurance run in the seventh.

Lourdes managed just five hits in the opener, with no one registering more than one.

Sarah Kessler earned the complete game shutout for Calumet while Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) suffered the loss (0-5).  She went 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while fanning four.

Lourdes (1-12) will remain home on Sunday afternoon, hosting Midway.  First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Gray Wolf Field.
