Lourdes scored five consecutive goals to open the second half on Wednesday afternoon, helping the Gray Wolves rally for an 11-10 upset over seventh-ranked Madonna at Wildcat Stadium.
"The team is really starting to come together and believe in themselves and each other," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said after the game. "The offense is starting to show their true colors and the face-off units have been doing a tremendous job. Defensively we were able to hold them down and we're really excited about moving into this week of practice and prep for our next WHAC game."
Madonna (3-3, 2-1 WHAC) built a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter before back-to-back goals by
Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse H.S.) and
Nate Allan (Peterborough, Ont./Saint Peters Catholic H.S.) less than a minute apart tied the game. The Crusaders tallied the last goal of the half though to take a 5-4 lead into intermission.
Jake Noel (Knoxville, Tenn./William Blount H.S.) tied the game just 1:04 into the third quarter with his second goal of the game before
Tyler Pezzot (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek H.S.) added a tally to give the Gray Wolves the lead 53 seconds later. Causley and
Kyle Schiel (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) added back-to-back goals 38 seconds apart before Pezzot put Lourdes on top 9-5 with his third goal of the game at the 7:14 mark.
Madonna raced back, tying the game at nine with 12:43 to play before Schiel and
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.) scored within 27 seconds of each other to put the Gray Wolves back in front for good. The Crusaders pulled within one but were unable to find the equalizer over the final 10:52 of the game.
The Crusaders outshot Lourdes 46-40 for the game but
Tyler Queen (Odenton, Md./Arundel H.S.) made nine saves in net for the Gray Wolves while Jeff Varner stopped 15 shots for Madonna.
The Gray Wolves held a 34-22 edge in ground balls and
Zach Stahura (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) won 17-of-22 faceoffs. Allan had seven ground balls and caused three turnovers to lead the Lourdes defense.
Lourdes (3-3, 1-2) has had its game on Saturday (April 3) at Michigan-Dearborn postponed. The Gray Wolves will make up their contest with Siena Heights on Monday, April 5. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at O'Laughlin Stadium.
