Lourdes wrapped up a four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Cornerstone, 13-5 and 7-5 in non-conference action at Gray Wolf Field.
The opening game saw Lourdes build an early 4-1 lead after two innings. The Gray Wolves scored a pair of unearned runs in the first frame, taking advantage of three Cornerstone errors, before
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) executed a squeeze bunt to plate a run in the third. Another Golden Eagle error allowed the Gray Wolves' fourth run to score.
After Cornerstone responded with four runs in the top of the third,
Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.) doubled home
Hailey Cramer (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) to tie the game at five.
Cornerstone took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring five times, before adding three more in the seventh.
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) had two hits to lead the Lourdes attack in the opener, as the Gray Wolves tallied eight total for the game.
Kaitlin Johnson went 4-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Golden Eagles' 13-hit attack. She also earned the win (1-0) in relief, pitching four innings, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out four.
Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Luman Christi H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) for Lourdes, yielding nine runs, only six of which were earned, as Cornerstone took advantage of six Gray Wolf errors in the opener.
In game two, Lourdes bats came alive, as the Gray Wolves pounded out 17 hits.
Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first, Cramer and
Alexis Nowowiecki (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) each tallied a RBI to put the Gray Wolves in front after one.
Cornerstone plated three in the top of the third before
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) delivered her first collegiate RBI, a single that scored Nowowiecki.
Nowowiecki and
Ella Leonard (Lorain, Ohio/Midview H.S.) each had a RBI single in the fifth, putting Lourdes back in front 5-4. The Golden Eagles immediately responded though, scoring three times in the sixth to pull out the win.
Nowowiecki, Gauthier, and
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) each had three hits for Lourdes in the loss.
Mikayla Meade earned the win (1-0) in the circle for Cornerstone (2-0) with one inning of relief while
Jenna Harris (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), allowing seven runs, six earned, in six innings.
Lourdes (0-4) will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves have added a road doubleheader against Tiffin to its schedule. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Softball Facility in Tiffin, Ohio.
