Lourdes scored twice in the final 20 minutes of the match on Friday evening to rally and defeat Michigan-Dearborn 2-1 in the Gray Wolves' regular season finale played at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.
"We showed good character to fight back after going down 1-0 in the first half," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "Michigan-Dearborn works extremely hard and is well organized defensively and difficult to break down."
Michigan-Dearborn (1-5, 1-5 WHAC) struck first, as Christian Cole put the Wolverines on the scoreboard with just 1:17 to play before intermission, scoring on the host's first shot on goal of the match.
The match remained deadlocked until 19:52 to play when
Leon Eisert (Leipzig, Germany/Kathe-Kollwitz Gymnasium) sent a cross in from the left that found
Brendon Long (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows H.S.) at the back post for a tap in, evening the contest 1-1. For Long, the goal was his team-leading eighth of the year, tying him for third on the school's single season charts.
With 6:11 to play in regulation, Eisert again began a play from the left side. His cross found
Olawole Ogunsanya (Dallas, Texas/Arlington H.S.), who flicked the ball past the Wolverine goalkeeper for his first tally of the year and what proved to be the match-winning goal.
Lourdes finished the match with a 13-8 shot advantage, and a 9-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Austin Dukes made seven stops for the Wolverines while
Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau [La.] H.S.) made two saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
"We're happy with the win and to finish a competitive WHAC schedule with a winning record," Johnson added. "We're looking forwards to a good week of training and our chance at participating in the WHAC tournament."
Lourdes (9-7-1, 6-4-1) will begin play in the WHAC tournament next Saturday, April 10, in the quarterfinal round. The conference will release the official tournament pairings following the completion of the league slate.
