Lourdes used an 11-1 run spanning the four quarters to defeat 10
th-ranked Madonna 12-4 on Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at Wildcat Stadium.
"Tonight's game was a very physical game and our guys out efforted the opponent," head coach
Patrick Yannerelli said afterwards. "We are very proud of everyone on the team and the way they played for each other. The team is really ready to compete in the semifinals."
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.) scored four times while
Nick Johnson (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) added three more goals and
Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse H.S.) dished out three assists for the ninth-ranked Gray Wolves as Lourdes extended its season.
Madonna led 2-1 late in the opening quarter when Gilhooly tallied his first marker of the game.
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook H.S.) scored the first two goals of the second to put the Gray Wolves in front for good as Lourdes opened up a 6-2 lead at intermission.
After the Crusaders tallied the first goal of the third, Lourdes found the back of the cage five times, including the first career goal by
Luke Burdridge (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.).
Johnson's final goal of the game increased the Gray Wolf advantage to 12-3 before Madonna (3-5) scored one final goal with just over two minutes to play.
Lourdes outshot Madonna 54-31 on the night, including 28-12 after halftime.
Tyler Queen (Odenton, Md./Arundel H.S.) made 14 saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
The Gray Wolves had a 38-26 ground ball advantage as well, with
Nate Allan (Peterborough, Ont./Saint Peters Catholic H.S.) registering a game-high 11 ground balls.
With the win, Lourdes (7-4) advances to the WHAC semifinals on Friday evening. The Gray Wolves will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to battle top-seeded, and regular season champion Indiana Tech (14-1). The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Warrior Athletic Field.
