Lourdes saw its women's volleyball season come to a close on Tuesday, as the Gray Wolves dropped a 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 match to 25
th-ranked Aquinas in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
"This was a match that was going to take our best to come away with a win and we just didn't have our best tonight," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "It was a tough end to our season."
The second-seed Saints never trailed in the opening set, building a quick 10-5 lead. The Gray Wolves pulled within one late, 17-16, before Aquinas closed the set on an 8-1 run. The second set was tight throughout, with eight ties and seven lead changes. Trailing 16-12, Lourdes battled back to take a 20-19 lead, only to see the Saints respond with the next five points on the way to taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Aquinas (20-2) led the final set from start to finish, racing out to an 11-2 lead. Lourdes was never able to get closer than seven the rest of the match.
Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) led seventh-seeded Lourdes (5-13) with 10 kills and 17 digs while hitting .292 for the night.
Michaela Eisenhauer (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta H.S.) added nine kills while swinging at a .412 clip and also tallied three blocks.
Annika Devendorf (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) led the Gray Wolf offense which hit just .087 as a team. She handed out 24 assists.
Kylie Christensen led Aquinas with 11 kills while Adrien Yondo tallied 11 digs. The Saints hit .243 for the match and finished with a 59-51 dig advantage.
