Cornerstone Tops Lourdes in Softball Doubleheader

Lourdes continued its 10-game homestand on Friday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Cornerstone 6-0 and 8-4 at Gray Wolf Field.
 
Following the games, Lourdes joined Northview High School in dedicating the field.
 
Cornerstone did all its damage in the second inning of game one, scoring six times, as 10 batters came to the plate.  A two-run single and a two-run double proved to be the big hits in the inning.
 
Lourdes managed just four hits in the opener, two by Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) and two more by Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.), and were unable to break through on the scoreboard.
 
Mikayla Meade went the distance in the circle for the Golden Eagles, earning the complete game shutout (5-4) without walking a batter and striking out one.  Jenna Harris (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West H.S.) suffered the loss (0-8) for the Gray Wolves.  Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) and Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) combined for 5.2 innings of scoreless relief. 
 
Cornerstone (12-8, 5-5) struck first again in game two, sending 10 batters to the plate in the opening inning while scoring four times.  The Gray Wolves answered with two in the bottom of the inning.  Richardson doubled home one run while another run scored on a double play ball.
 
The Golden Eagles added a run in the second before Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.) plated an answer for Lourdes on a fielder's choice in the fourth.  Cornerstone added three more in the fifth to push the lead to 8-3.
 
Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) delivered a RBI single in the seventh, but the Gray Wolves stranded a pair and could not complete the comeback attempt.
 
Ashley Loera went the distance in the circle for the win (3-0), scattering eight hits while walking four.  Ashley Roth (LaRue, Ohio/Elgin H.S.) suffered the loss (4-6), while Applegate again tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
 
Wallace went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in game two while Waters also had a two-hit contest.
 
Lourdes (4-21, 1-5) will remain home on Saturday to entertain Aquinas.  First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 11 a.m.
