Plasencio Surpasses 1,000 Digs but Lourdes Falls Twice Saturday

Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) became just the third Lourdes player to reach 1,000 digs for her career on Saturday, but the Gray Wolves dropped a pair of matches inside of Devos Gymnasium in Palos Heights, Ill.  Lourdes fell 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 in its opener against Judson before dropping an 18-25, 25-23, 25-11, 25-17 decision in match two against host Trinity Christian.
 
"We need to be the more aggressive serving team and the better passing team to give ourselves a chance to win," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "Today we were not.  We will have to get to work to make that happen in the future."
 
Plasencio entered the day just 11 digs shy of the 1,000 mark, and surpassed the century mark as part of a 17-dig effort in the opener against Judson.  She added another 14 digs against Trinity Christian and now has 1,020 in her four years with the Gray Wolves.
 
A 9-1 run by the Eagles in the first set of the opening match allowed Judson to take a 16-7 lead on the way to taking the opening stanza.  Judson committed just three errors and hit .276 while limiting Lourdes to just.083 hitting.
 
Judson (3-0) used a 13-2 run in set two allowed the Eagles to build a 17-7 lead.  Lourdes battled back to within four, 22-18, but could not finish the comeback.
 
In set three, the Eagles forced the Gray Wolves into 10 attack errors on the way to completing the sweep.
 
Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) led Lourdes with eight kills while Cammy Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) added seven more while hitting .412.  Katey Stakolich (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) handed out a team-high 18 assists as Lourdes hit just .079 for the match.  Defensively, Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) recorded three blocks for the Gray Wolves.
 
Mackenzie Ebert led Judson with 10 kills and hit .360 on an offense that swung at a .238 clip.  Enola Varga tallied a match-high 22 digs for the Eagles.
 
Lourdes picked up its first set victory of the season to open the match against Trinity Christian.  A 13-3 run by the Gray Wolves allowed Lourdes to open up a 21-9 advantage on the way to the win.  The Gray Wolves hit .273 with just two attack errors while forcing the Trolls into eight miscues and a .125 hitting percentage.
 
The Gray Wolves led 14-11 in set two before Trinity Christian responded with an 8-2 spurt to pull in front.  Lourdes trailed 23-19 before scoring four straight points to tie the set, only to see the Trolls even the match after scoring the final two points.
 
Trinity Christian (2-1) raced out to a 15-4 lead in the third while taking a two sets to one advantage.  Lourdes managed just six kills and hit -.037 in the set.
 
In the fourth set, Lourdes was within one, 14-13, but the Trolls closed the match on an 11-4 run to earn the victory.  Trinity Christian had 21 kills and hit .500 to close out the match.
 
McBride again led the Gray Wolves offensively with 13 kills while hitting .323 while Annika Devendorf (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) handed out a team-high 15 assists as Lourdes hit .145 for the match.
 
Sarah Kiwan led Trinity Christian with 17 kills and hit .421 while Kenzie Gibson had 27 digs for the Trolls.
 
Lourdes (0-3) will have a week off before returning to the court next Saturday (Sept. 4) for its home opener.  The Gray Wolves will battle Saint Mary-of-the-Woods at 11 a.m. before facing Spring Arbor at 5 p.m.
