Lourdes Wins Two Five-Setters on Friday

Lourdes was forced to five sets twice on Friday, with the Gray Wolves rallying from two sets down to defeat Indiana-Southeast 16-25, 11-25, 26-24, 25-14, 15-9 before downing host Indiana East 25-21, 24-26, 25-17, 14-25, 15-10 at Lingle Court in Richmond, Ind.
 
In the opener against Indiana-Southeast, Macey Zinser (Bucyrus, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) put down 12 kills and Kortney Ellison (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) added 10 more for the Gray Wolves, as the team hit .041 for the match.  Annika Devendorf (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) handed out a team-high 27 assists.
 
Defensively, Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) recorded 18 digs and Quinn Yondo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.) added 12 more while Zinser was involved in seven blocks.
 
"We didn't play our best volleyball to begin the match, but we were able to keep at it and turn things around," head coach Greg Reitz said following the team's first victory of the season.  "This was a great match for perseverance, but not the best for representing our skills."
 
Lourdes hit negative in each of the first two sets while falling behind quickly.  Indiana-Southeast (2-4) had three match points in the third set to complete the sweep, leading 24-21, but the Gray Wolves responded, scoring the final five points to extend the match. 
 
Leading 13-12 in the fourth, Lourdes scored 12 of the final 14 points to force the decisive set.  In the fifth, the Gray Wolves led the Grenadiers to just three kills as Indiana-Southeast hit -.176 in the stanza.  With the set tied at seven, Lourdes scored the next four points to take control for the win.
 
Emilee Organ led Indiana-Southeast with 14 kills while Lexie Fisher had 16 digs.
 
In the final match of the night, Lourdes trailed the Red Wolves 17-12 in the first set before going on an 11-2 run to pull in front and win the opening set.  Indiana East (5-5) responded in the second to even the match before the Gray Wolves scored six straight points in the third to pull in front 21-15 on the way to the victory.  Lourdes hit .357 in the third.
 
The Red Wolves forced the decisive fifth set after racing out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth.  In the fifth, Lourdes put down 12 kills and hit .345 to pull out their second victory of the day.  Trailing 8-5, a 7-1 Gray Wolf run proved to be the difference.
 
Ellison led Lourdes with 16 kills and hit .286 while Vanessa Villarreal (Monroe, Mich./Saint Mary Central Catholic H.S.) added 15 kills.  Devendorf dished out 45 assists while leading the Gray Wolves to a .203 hitting night offensively.  On defense, Plasencio had 22 digs to pace Lourdes.
 
Sheridan Phillips led Indiana East with 14 kills and hit .545 while Sammei Fulkerson-Bird had a team-high 15 digs.
 
Lourdes (2-4) will return to action on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves travel to Adrian, Mich. to face Siena Heights.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the SHU Fieldhouse.
