Lourdes began Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 shutout victory over Siena Heights at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich. for the Gray Wolves' first victory ever against the Saints.
Â
"The girls rose to the occasion today and we are incredibly proud of their approach and preparation to earn our first WHAC win of the year," head coach
Jackie Phillips said afterwards.
Â
In a match that was defensive in nature, Lourdes held a 4-3 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes but neither team would find the back of the net.Â
Â
The Gray Wolves broke through in with 32 minutes left in regulation.Â
Alexis Gordon (Medina, Ohio/Medina H.S.) had the ball in the middle of the field and found
Chloe Shaffer (Rossford, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) on the right side about 25 yards out. Shaffer lofted the ball far post over goalkeeper Kara Bishop for her second goal of the season.
Â
Siena Heights (5-2-1, 0-1 WHAC) had the pressure for the final 20 minutes, but
Emmy Rodger (Romeo, Mich./Romeo H.S.) made two second half saves, including knocking a ball over the crossbar late in the match to preserve the shutout.
Â
Rodger finished the match with four saves while Bishop had three. The Saints finished the match with a 7-6 shot advantage.Â
Â
Lourdes (4-1-3, 1-0) returns home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
