Chloe Nofziger (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) allowed Lourdes to build a lead on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves notched their first victory of the season, 2-1, on the road against Point Park at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa.
"This was a strong overall performance for the girls," head coach
Jackie Phillips said afterwards. "Their preparation, focus, and energy were key to our success today."
The Gray Wolves outshot Point Park (0-3) 8-1 over the opening 45 minutes, and finally broke through on the scoreboard with 6:58 left before halftime. Shaffer scored her sixth career goal to put Lourdes in front 1-0 at halftime.
Nofziger doubled the Lourdes advantage with what proved to be the match-winner in the 55
th minute with her second career tally.
The Pioneers cut the lead in half as Cara Spry scored with 23:23 to play in the contest, but Point Park was not able to find the equalizer late in the match.
Lourdes finished the match with a 16-4 shot advantage, including an 11-2 edge on goal.
Emmy Rodger (Romeo, Mich./Romeo H.S.), who started in goal for the Gray Wolves, made the team's lone save. Gillian Bierhals made four first half stops for the Pioneers while Ella Serlin made five stops in the second half.
Lourdes (1-0-1) remains on the road Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Notre Dame, Ind. to battle Holy Cross (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Saints Field.
