Lourdes Win Streak Ends Wednesday Night with Setback at UNOH

Lourdes saw its school-record 13-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday evening as the University of Northwestern Ohio defeated Lourdes 70-64 inside of Racers Gymnasium in Lima, Ohio.

The Gray Wolves were limited to just 37.7% shooting from the floor, including just 3-of-20 (15%) from three-point range while connecting on 15-of-23 (65.2%) free throws.  The Racers, conversely, shot 47.2% from the field.

"We struggled to pound the ball in the paint which is where we like to go," head coach Dennis Hopson said afterwards.  "We also shot just 15% from three which didn't help.  We let them hang around and were never able to get the separation we needed."

Seven straight points early in the game gave Lourdes its largest advantage of the night, 7-4, before the Racers answered with five in a row of their own.  With the game tied at 12, Lourdes went more than seven minutes without scoring as Northwestern Ohio built a 21-12 advantage.

The Racers lead grew to as many as 11 before Lourdes made a late run before intermission to close to within five, 32-27, at intermission.

Lourdes tied the game at 36 four minutes into the second half and took the lead a minute later on a Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) jumper.  The lead see-sawed back-and-forth throughout the second half with neither team leading by more than by five over the next 10 minutes.

A McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights H.S.) basket with 3:41 to play evened the game at 57 but the Gray Wolves were not able to pull in front the rest of the way.  UNOH scored the next six points, holding Lourdes scoreless for the next two minutes and closed out the game in the final minute.

Holifield led Lourdes with 19 points while White and Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 17 points each.  Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with five assists.

Biggz Johnson led all scorers with 20 points for Northwestern Ohio (9-12, 6-6 WHAC) while Ben Westrick added 17 points.

Lourdes (18-4, 10-4) returns home for a pair of games beginning on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Madonna.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
