Lourdes Rallies for Five-Set Victory over Aquinas

Lourdes stormed back from a set down and trailing 15-5 in set four to defeat Aquinas 12-25, 25-13, 27-29, 26-24, 15-11 on Friday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"We had to battle tonight, and we stepped up to the challenge," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "Our ball control steadied out as the match went along and our serving got us back into the match at critical times by getting them out of system."

In the opening set, Aquinas scored 10 consecutive points to build a quick 15-5 lead on the way to taking the early lead in the match.  Lourdes returned the favor in the second, putting down 13 kills and hitting .323.  A 10-2 Gray Wolf run broke the set open helping to even the match.

Aquinas (8-17, 4-7 WHAC) erased four Lourdes set points in the third to pull out the win and built a 15-5 advantage in the fourth before the Gray Wolves rallied.  The Gray Wolves fought back, finally tying the set at 22 before winning in extra points to force the decisive final set.

The Gray Wolves never trailed in the fifth and used a 5-1 run to pull away for good, 12-8, on the way to completing the comeback.

McKenna Hall (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) led the way with 17 kills for Lourdes while Jolie Sobb (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) added 14 kills and contributed 12 digs defensively for a double-double.  Katey Stakolich (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) handed out 43 assists and picked up 11 digs while directing an offense that hit .137 as a team.

Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) and Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) led the defense, registering 18 digs each while Cammy Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) was involved in six blocks.

Brooke Nicholson led Aquinas with 13 kills while Jordyn Carlyle had 28 digs.

Lourdes (9-12, 5-7) will look for its third straight victory on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host 22nd-ranked Cornerstone.  First serve is set for 1 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
