Lourdes wrapped up the home portion of the 2022 schedule on Saturday afternoon, notching a 3-0 shutout of Siena Heights at Wildcat Stadium on Senior Day.
"I was so happy to see the ball go in the net," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "It wasn't easy, but that first goal really lifted some of the weight off everyone's shoulders. They played a pretty high defensive line so we felt we could get behind them with the pace of our forwards."
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes despite Lourdes holding a 6-3 shot advantage over Siena Heights (5-8-1, 3-5-1 WHAC).
The Gray Wolves found the back of the net 7:49 into the second half as
Hussein Sbeiti (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn H.S.) sent a cross into the box where
Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) fired a shot that went under Saints goalkeeper Ricardo Moreno into the net.
Sbeiti added another assist just under 11 minutes later. He fired a shot that was saved but
Martin Coronel (Asuncion, Paraguay/Universidad Americana) banged in the rebound to make it 2-0 Gray Wolves for his first goal at Lourdes.
"Hus in particular did a great job of looking to stretch their back line and get behind them consistently, and he was rewarded with a couple of well-deserved assists", Johnson added. "Credit to Diego and Martin for doing the work to get themselves into goal-scoring areas. That is something we have been hammering on, so it was great to see us showing that urgency."
Leon Eisert (Leipzig, Germany/Kathe-Kollwitz Gymnasium) added one final insurance tally for the Gray Wolves with 13:36 to play. He fired a shot from 20 yards out that went through Moreno's hands.
Lourdes finished the match with a 15-7 shot advantage with
Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) making two saves in net as he played nearly 78 minutes between the posts.
"Overall, we're just happy to have the three points and are looking forwards to the trip to Cleary on Wednesday," Johnson concluded.
Lourdes (4-8-4, 2-4-3) begins its final road trip of the regular season on Wednesday evening with a trip to Howell, Mich. to face Cleary. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lake Trust Stadium.
