Lourdes Knocks Off Lawrence Tech to Advance to WHAC Semifinals

For the first time in program history, Lourdes has won a match in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament as the Gray Wolves defeated Lawrence Tech 1-0 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday evening at Blue Devil Stadium in Southfield, Mich.

With the victory, the sixth-seeded Gray Wolves set a new program record with their ninth win of the season while also tallying a team-best 10th shutout of the year.

"This team has rewritten the history books and we could not be prouder," head coach Jackie Phillips said afterwards.  "They played a brilliant first 45 minutes and we are thrilled with how they handed what LTU threw at us in the second 45."

The lone goal of the match came with 16:36 to play before halftime.  Annah Zacerkowny (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich H.S.) headed a ball forward to Emily Johnson (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer H.S.), who fired a shot from 35 yards out over the top of Lawrence Tech netminder Gabi Nelson into the back of the net.  The goal was the second of the season for Johnson.  It was the fifth of the senior's career, and second career match-winner.

Lourdes held a 7-6 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes but withstood a barrage from the Blue Devils in the second half.  Lawrence Tech (6-5-6), the tournament's third seed, outshot the Gray Wolves 11-1 in the second stanza but Emmy Rodger (Romeo, Mich./Romeo H.S.) made three of her four saves over the final 45 minutes to earn the clean sheet.  Nelson made just one save on the night for the hosts.

Lourdes (9-4-4) will return to the road on Saturday afternoon, heading to Livonia, Mich. to battle second-seeded Madonna in semifinal action.  Kickoff is set for noon at the Madonna Athletic Complex.
