A jumper with 30.2 seconds remaining lifted the University of Northwestern Ohio to a 59-58 victory over Lourdes on Tuesday evening inside Racer Gymnasium in Lima, Ohio.
Â
"This is on me," head coach
Dennis Hopson said after the game. "I need to do a better job of managing this team. Right now we can't score the basketball."
Â
The Gray Wolves led 58-51 with 4:43 to play after a lay-in by
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.), but Lourdes would be unable to score the rest of the way.
Â
A three-pointer by Hunter Bode made it a one-point game with 1:30 to play. The Gray Wolves had three shots on their next possession, but a pair of blocks followed by a defensive rebound allowed Biggz Johnson to hit what would be the game-winner in the lane. Lourdes had two chances on its final possess, but a missed three-pointer followed by the put back misfiring allowed the Racers to escape with the win.
Â
Lourdes started fast, jumping out to a quick 17-6 lead less than four minutes into the game. The Racers then limited Lourdes to just one field goal over the next 10 minutes as the Racers battled back to tie the game at 19. Lourdes never let Northwestern Ohio take the lead in the first half though, taking a 32-29 lead into the locker room.
Â
The Racers took their first lead of the game, 36-34, with 18 minutes to play and still maintained a one-point edge with 10 minutes to play before a triple by
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) put the Gray Wolves back in front 47-45. Lourdes would gradually extend its lead to seven, setting up the final minutes.
Â
Harris led Lourdes with 18 points while Holifield added 16 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.Â
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) chipped in 15 points as the trio accounted for all but nine of the Gray Wolves' points.Â
Â
Both teams shot 40% from the floor but Lourdes was just 6-of-25 (24%) from three-point range while the Racers connected at a 40.9% (9-of-22) clip.
Â
Bode led Northwestern Ohio (2-6, 1-4 WHAC) with 20 points while Johnson added 15 more.
