Lourdes Falls to #19 Northwestern Ohio in WHAC Quarters

Lourdes saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to 19th-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at Racer Stadium in Lima, Ohio.

"This was a tough way to end our season," head coach Matt Johnson said afterwards.  "The wind was such a factor in the first half.  We really felt like the first couple of goals were affected by it, as well as just making it hard for us to gain a foothold in the game.  UNOH is such a strong team to begin with.  They certainly punished us when it was at their back.  We fought hard in the second half, but 4-0 was always going to be a stiff task.  In the end we didn't have enough quality."

The third-seeded Racers scored all four of their goals in the first 35 minutes of the match.  Tomas Echevarria started the scoring just 7:51 into the contest, lofting a ball that the wind carried over Gray Wolf goalkeeper Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono).

Echevarria then assisted on Northwestern Ohio's second goal, as Jovaunn Ramos doubled the lead with 24:24 to play before halftime.  Moritz Guettel made it 3-0 Racers seven minutes later, scoring on a free kick from the left side of the box.

Echevarria notched his second tally of the match with 10:11 to play before intermission after receiving a feed from Simon Von Benzon, who garnered his second assist of the match.

Northwestern Ohio (14-1-4) outshot Lourdes 10-3 in the first half before finishing the match with a 19-11 advantage.

Lourdes (6-9-4) finally broke through on the scoreboard with 1:13 to play as Anthony Samuel (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago/Chaguanas) converted a penalty kick for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Silva finished the match with five saves for the Gray Wolves while Danilo Abayo had four stops for the Racers.
