Lourdes used a big run early in the second quarter to pull in front for good on Friday evening as the Gray Wolves notched their first road victory of the season, defeating Madonna 72-61 inside the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena in Livonia, Mich.
Â
"It was a great night to see all three of our seniors get to start together and for
Addie Conroy (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan H.S.) to score the first basket of the game was so meaningful for our team," head coach
Tandy Bradford said afterwards. "She represents everything in our program's mission and represents Lourdes with nothing but class. It was great to get both a win and a WHAC win on her final night in a Gray Wolf uniform."
Â
Logan Ingram (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Mount Pleasant H.S.) made four three-pointers on her way to a team-high 14 points while
Shae Pedroza (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) and
Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio/Fairview H.S.) each added 11 points.
Â
Leading by one after the opening period, the Gray Wolves opened the second on a 12-3 run to build a 10-point lead, 24-14. Lourdes would not relinquish its advantage the rest of the way. The Gray Wolves led 29-19 when Madonna scored six straight points late in the quarter before Lourdes stopped the streak and took a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
Â
A quick six-point burst early in the third pushed the Gray Wolf lead to 14, 44-30, and led by double figures most of the stanza. With Lourdes in front 66-53 with 5:22 to play in the game, Madonna made one late push. The Crusaders scored seven consecutive points to pull within six with just under two minutes to play before the Gray Wolves closed out the game.
Â
Lourdes scored 36 of its 72 points in the paint with 31 of its points coming from its bench. The Gray Wolf defense limited the Crusaders to 37.5% shooting, including just 2-of-10 from three-point range and forced 20 turnovers.
Â
Paige Humerickhouse led Madonna (0-12, 0-8 WHAC) with 18 pints while Ashley Hill added 17 more.
Â
Lourdes (5-6, 3-5) remains on the road Monday evening, stepping out of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play to visit Kentucky Christian. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. inside Damron Hall of Champions in Grayson, Ky.
