Siena Heights ended fifth-ranked Lourdes' 16-match home court win streak on Tuesday evening, upsetting the Gray Wolves 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
The setback was Lourdes' first overall on the season, as the Gray Wolves had posted three consecutive 3-0 sweeps entering the contest.
"We didn't execute the way we needed to in order to win the match," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "They did what they needed to in order to pressure us. We need to improve on our serve and pass game to get back on track."
Lourdes committed 17 service errors in what was an otherwise fairly even match. Both teams had 39 kills as the Saints outhit the Gray Wolves .284 to .255 on the night.
The Gray Wolves jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set before Siena Heights battled back. The Saints pulled to within one, 21-20 before scoring the next four points to take the lead for good. Lourdes held a 15-12 lead in set two before the Saints pulled even at 17. Four straight points again allowed the visitors to take the second set. Lourdes built another 15-12 lead in the third before an 8-2 run allowed Siena Heights to take the lead for the final time on the way to the sweep.
Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) led all players with 14 kills for the Gray Wolves while hitting .286. He also had 11 digs, matching
Guga Heidrich's (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) total for the team lead.
Sawyer Schafer (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville H.S.) handed out 34 assists.
Ramon Matos paced Siena Heights (6-2, 2-2 WHAC) with 13 kills while Joudiel Poveymirow tallied 11 digs.
Lourdes (3-1, 2-1) remains home on Friday evening for a top-15 showdown with 14
th-ranked Saint Xavier. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
